Planning a trip to Japan? You might be wondering:
Traveling without a working smartphone can be more stressful than you think. But don't worry. By setting up an eSIM in advance, you’ll be connected the moment you step off the plane, allowing you to start your adventure immediately.
This guide covers everything you need to know about using a Japan eSIM on your iPhone—from basic setup and compatibility to a comparison of the most affordable plans.
An eSIM (Embedded SIM) is a digital SIM chip built directly into your iPhone. Unlike traditional physical SIM cards, there’s no need to swap tiny cards. You simply download the plan through your phone’s settings, and you're good to go.
While Holafly and Airalo are world-famous, users on platforms like Reddit frequently report "connection lag" or "certain apps not working" while in Japan. The culprit? Their connection method: Roaming.
If you want to enjoy shopping and dining in Japan without the lag, a "Direct Local Connection" eSIM is the only way to go.
Since iPhones support universal frequency bands (Bands 1, 3, 19, etc.), a device purchased anywhere in the world will work seamlessly with Japan's Docomo network.
*US models (iPhone 14 and later), which are eSIM-only, are confirmed to work perfectly with our Japan eSIM.
While these models do not support eSIM, you can still use a physical SIM card. However, for the best experience in Japan, we recommend upgrading to an eSIM-compatible device if possible.
Devices purchased through a carrier may be locked. Before you fly, please ensure your carrier has unlocked your device. Check this via: Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock. It should say "No SIM restrictions."
You will receive a QR code immediately after purchase. We recommend setting it up before you arrive in Japan.
Travel Mobile eSIMs are refundable as long as they haven't been activated.
The #1 reason for connection issues is an old "Configuration Profile" from a previous SIM. Go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management and remove any old profiles.
Go to Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM and scan your QR code. *Make sure you are connected to a stable Wi-Fi network during this process.
Open "Cellular Data Network" and enter the specific APN values provided by Travel Mobile in the "Personal Hotspot" section. If you skip this, you won't be able to share your data with your laptop or iPad.
Once you land in Japan, go to "Cellular Data" and select your Travel Mobile line. If you see "docomo" next to the signal bars, you're all set!
| Service | Network | Duration | Data | Price (JPY) | Cost per GB |

1GB per day (approx. 15GB for 2 weeks) is plenty for maps and social media. Choose a 30GB or 50GB plan if you plan on streaming video. See our Data Usage Guide for details.
Match the plan to your length of stay. Travel Mobile offers 8, 16, and 30-day options.
Avoid "Roaming" plans that route through foreign servers. A "Local Plan" with a direct connection is the secret to a smooth trip.
Look for services that work with your iPhone's native settings without requiring extra app installations.
Q. Can I still use my home phone number?
A. Yes! Thanks to Dual SIM functionality, you can keep your home SIM active for emergency calls while using the Japan eSIM for all your data needs.
Q. What if I can't connect?
A. 99% of issues are solved in 3 steps: ① Toggle Airplane Mode, ② Delete old profiles, ③ Double-check APN settings.
Q. Does it come with a Japanese phone number?
A. This is a data-only plan, so it does not include a voice number (090/080). However, since you'll have a Japanese IP, apps like LINE, FaceTime, and WhatsApp will provide high-quality calling.
